چکیده

Membranes are two-dimensional sheets of molecules which are embedded and fluctuate in three-dimensional space. The shape and out-of-plane fluctuations of tensionless membranes are controlled by their bending rigidity. Due to their out-of-plane fluctuations, flexible membranes exhibit very different behaviour to flat two-dimensional systems. We discuss three properties of membranes: (i) the renormalization of the bending rigidity in fluid membranes due to undulations on short length scales; (ii) the suppression of the crystalline phase, and the hexatic-tofluid transition; and (iii) the lamellar-to-sponge transition in systems with variable topology. We focus on simulation studies, which are based on the numerical analysis of dynamically triangulated surface models.

Fluctuating shells under pressure.

Thermal fluctuations strongly modify the large length-scale elastic behavior of cross-linked membranes, giving rise to scale-dependent elastic moduli. Whereas thermal effects in flat membranes are well understood, many natural and artificial microstructures are modeled as thin elastic shells. Shells are distinguished from flat membranes by their nonzero curvature, which provides a size-dependen...

How the Nonextensivity Parameter Affects Energy Fluctuations

In this article, the effect of the nonextensivity parameter on the energy fluctuations of nonextensive systems is studied in two different versions of the Tsallis statistical mechanics. Once a general expression has been reported for the energy fluctuations in the second version (Tsallis work in 1988), the energy fluctuations of an ideal gas and a harmonic oscillator are studied in the second a...

How cells tiptoe on adhesive surfaces before sticking.

Cell membranes are studded with protrusions that were thoroughly analyzed with electron microscopy. However, the nanometer-scale three-dimensional motions generated by cell membranes to fit the topography of foreign surfaces and initiate adhesion remain poorly understood. Here, we describe the dynamics of surface deformations displayed by monocytic cells bumping against fibronectin-coated surfa...

How lipid asymmetry can make vesicles fusion-competent by inhibition of the thermal undulations.

Introduction The first step in any fusion event involving biological membranes or liposomes is the close contact between the two lipid bilayers. Hefore the local collapse which gives rise to a single membrane from two membranes, the two phospholipid interfaces have to approach each other. Different interacting forces are involved. Van der Waals forces are attractive and can extend to distance o...

Decrumpling membranes by quantum effects

– The phase diagram of an incompressible fluid membrane subject to quantum and thermal fluctuations is calculated exactly in a large number of dimensions of configuration space. At zero temperature, a crumpling transition is found at a critical bending rigidity 1/αc. For membranes of fixed lateral size, a crumpling transition occurs at nonzero temperatures in an auxiliary mean field approximati...
